Cases of damage

  • Assessment and documentation of crack formations in structures
  • Assessment and documentation of damage to structures caused by groundwater or water in the soil, determination of the type of strain by means of drilling, sounding, installation of measuring points
  • Assessment and documentation in the case of changes of position, tilting or failure of supporting structures/retaining walls, embankments and the like
  • Performance of all types of geotechnical examinations to determine the causes of the damage
  • Recommendation and planning of suitable remedial measures and rehabilitation measures
  • Metrological monitoring (e.g. measurements of inclination and crack width)
  • Formulation of appropriate expert opinions, also see the topic “Experts”
  • Studies on rehabilitation variants

Damage appraisal

Depending on the degree of damage, damage to structures caused by the building site can either be merely bothersome and annoying, or it can pose a threat to the stability of the building. A large amount of the building damage on record is connected with the influence of the groundwater or the condition of the building site. Having an independent expert determine the causes for the damage and recommend and possibly plan suitable remedial measures without pursuing any interests in terms of supply is indispensable for the owner who is often not sufficiently knowledgeable. Just as in medicine, a careful diagnosis is the basic requirement for long-term “healing”.

Not many people know, for example, that much damage to buildings that is caused by cracks in the greater Rhine-Main area is connected with the shrinkage of the widespread tertiary clay (dehumidification caused by climatic and other factors). As regards these cases of damage and the suitable remedial measures, BFM can draw on experience from well over 100 cases.

As an independent engineering company, BFM consults private, institutional and public clients in the case of building damage caused by the building site, and helps to determine the causes or possibly the persons responsible, independently of the size of the structure. Examination techniques used by the BFM laboratory (e.g. sounding) or metrological supervision can be used for these cases, as required. We place great value on interdisciplinary cooperation with experts with other areas of expertise, e.g. supporting framework planners.
